I hope you had an enjoyable week and are looking forward to the weekend. We've had a bit of a different week at school, with the gr. 9 - 12  students taking a break from regular classes to write their final exams. Its been great to see so many kids working hard to prepare for exams.

This week saw a great opportunity for our gr. 6 students thanks to Mr. Rodgers at Crossfield Elementary. Our gr. 6 students joined the elementary in hearing a presentation on ATV, Snowmobile, and Avalanche safety. With so many of our students and families enjoying off road vehicles, it was timely for the students to hear proper safety measures to ensure they can enjoy the experience while being safe. Follow the link below for some great links to other safety areas explored by the Alberta Snowmobile Association

Alberta Accountability Pillars Survey

Gr. 7 and 10 parents, you may have received a letter in the mail asking you to fill in the Accountability Pillars Survey. This is important feedback for our school and we appreciate each of taking the time to fill it out. When you've completed the survey, have your child bring back the RAC code you receive for a small prize!

I hope everyone had a good break and is enjoying getting back in the swing of life in January. Looks like we are going to have a bit of a break in the temperatures, which should be nice.

We are moving into our exam season for gr. 9 - 12 students. The last formal day for gr. 9 - 12 students is Thursday, January 19th. After that, the only mandatory attendance for gr. 9 - 12 students will be for their exams. 2nd semester courses start on Tuesday, January 31st.

The only exceptions will be for students who are in gr. 9 with outstanding assignments or in need of extra tutorial time. Those parents and students will be contacted directly with more information about the dates and times when their student will be required to be at school to catch up on their work. Keep an eye on this in the coming week gr. 9 parents.

Regularly scheduled classes will run for gr. 6 - 8 students through the exam season.

Thanks for all your support, good luck to our students as they finish off their semester 1 courses, and have a great week.

Our last Fan Out of 2016! Hard to believe.

The last 3.5 months of school has been a whirl wind for me, getting to know the students, staff, parents, and everyone else who makes WGM a great place for kids. I've been overwhelmed by the support and care shown by everyone to ensure our kids find success. Parents and guardians play such an enormous role in educating kids - I thank you for your continued support of what we are doing here at Murdoch. It does not go unnoticed.

May you all take some time over the coming weeks to spend time with family and rest up for the new year. Thanks for all you do and have a great Christmas season.

December 15, 2016

I hope this doesn't throw your whole weekend off, but I thought I would send this out a day early as I am not in tomorrow.

This past week at school made me feel incredibly grateful for the staff, students, and parents that call W.G. Murdoch home. The past 3.5 months have been a long stretch of school, with everyone getting to know each other quite well. It is so encouraging to me when I see our kids engaged both in the classroom and through extra curricular. Many parents, students, and staff sacrifice their time and energy to create great opportunities for our students. From a terrific dance show to our winter band concert and all the sports going on as well, kids are getting involved outside of school time to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Every year around this time I'm overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude for all that we have in our part of the world. With the events unfolding around the world right now, it makes me even more grateful to live in a peaceful, stable country like Canada. I encourage you over the coming days to sit back and reflect on what you have to be thankful for. We are thankful for the students you send us everyday and the opportunity to work with them.

Have a great weekend and talk to you next week!

Melissa found a great article that some of you might find useful. Happy reading!

How to Strengthen your Child's Emotional Intelligence

December 9, 2016

I hope this email finds you doing well and that you are completely frozen from the weather this past week.

With the cold snap, this is a good opportunity to remind you of Rocky View Schools closure policy. Administrative Policy 131 states:

When snow conditions make roads impassable, and/or when the wind chill factor reaches or exceeds -40 degrees C, school closure procedures MAY be initiated. Closure procedures due to weather will be initiated only before conveying students to school in the morning, by 5:30 AM on the day of the potential closure. Once students are being conveyed to school, the school will not be closed because of weather conditions until regular dismissal time.

We will follow proper protocol when deciding to close school for the day and ensure all parents and students are communicated to in a timely fashion. Thanks for your understanding with this.

It is hard to believe we have 2 weeks of school left prior to Christmas break. A reminder that our last day is Thursday, December 22nd. Due to the later break, we do not return to school till Monday, January 9th. We will hit the ground running as students start preparing for exams starting shortly after their return. Please refer to our website for the exam schedule.

Thanks for all of your support through these first 3 months of school. Have a great weekend.

Hope you enjoyed a good week and are looking forward to the weekend. We’ve had a busy week here at school.

Rocky View Schools is undergoing a Ward Boundary Review that could have a direct impact on our school community. With the constant growth in our division over the years, representation for certain Board Trustees has grown significantly more than others. With this, the Board of Trustees committed to look at their ward boundary model prior to the next election, which is in 2017. There are opportunities to have your voice heard on this review, with the closest meeting being held on December 8th at the Education Centre in Airdrie (2651 Chinook Winds Dr SW). November 18, 2016

Thank you to everyone who came out these past two nights for our Parent Teacher Interviews. It’s critical for staff to join with parents in supporting our students in their progress at school.

On Wednesday, Nov 23rd, we are holding our School Council meeting at 6:00 PM. The first item we will be gathering feedback on is the modernization plans  at W.G. Murdoch. The funding for modernizations of this scale do not come along often and we want to ensure parent voice is heard. Many of you have attended W.G. Murdoch so you can provide perspective both as a student and a parent. We would love to have you join us next Wednesday at 6:00pm.

Recently, the W.G. Murdoch staff has started reading a terrific book called Mindset, by Carol Dweck. The book outlines the differences between a Fixed and Growth Mindset. In reading the book, I learned as much from it as a parent as I did an educator. If you are interested, I would highly recommend reading the book this year along with the staff. I was the guest writer on the Rocky View Schools Empower the Potential Blog this week and wrote some thoughts about the Mindsets as well.

I hope you’re enjoying the unseasonably warm fall weather and looking forward to the weekend.

We are honouring our past today with our Remembrance Day Ceremony at 11:10 AM. This is always one of the highlights of my school year. Seeing students, staff, and the community pause to appreciate the enormous sacrifice that so many made so we can enjoy the freedoms we have  is moving. Whenever I get to spend time prepping for what I need to say in these ceremonies, it leads me to a place of gratitude. I hope you get to spend some time in reflection either at our ceremony today or at another one on Remembrance Day to appreciate the heroes that have gone before us.

A reminder that we are holding our Parent Teacher Interviews next week on Wednesday and Thursday. To sign up, follow this link. If you have any questions, feel free to talk to Cindy in the office. We look forward to 2 great evenings of conversations with parents.

Thanks for your support of our school and have a great weekend.

We’re thrilled to see the nice weather so our farmers can get back to harvest. Hoping it continues for long enough to get all the crops off!

Our week started off with a terrific Halloween Parade which featured many of our students dressing up. The costumes were unbelievable. On Thursday, the graduates played the teachers in a volleyball game, which was narrowly won by the teachers. It was great having these and other events that promote so much school spirit at Murdoch.

Speaking of school spirit, you are all invited on Wednesday, November 23rd, to attend our monthly School Council meeting. The meeting is being held at 6:00 PM in the lunch room. As some of you might be aware, W.G. Murdoch is undergoing a modernization to the lunch room area that should be ready for the fall of 2017. Our goal is to gather as much feedback from staff, students, and community on what they would like to see done. I know many of you attended W.G. Murdoch so getting feedback from parents who also were students here would be awesome. I hope to see you on the 23rd!

Have a great weekend, talk to you next Friday!

October 28, 2016

I hope you had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend. We had another terrific event at W.G. Murdoch this week with our fall band concert. The theme this year was Student Choice, with songs ranging from Eye of the Tiger to Clocks by Coldplay. With over 100 students participating in band, the energy in the gym was amazing. Thank you to the students, Ms. Booth, and all the parents who support our band program.

I was forwarded a though provoking article this week about kids and their phones. I’ve included the link below.

Kids & Screentime

We are diligent at W.G. Murdoch ensuring that students are not attached their phones during instructional time. I was encouraged after spending a class with a group of grade 9’s. We had a bit of time at the end of class and students were sitting in groups, chatting with each other about a variety of topics. After I left I reflected on how nice it was to see kids talking face to face, not all glued to their phones and throwing thoughts in here and there. I would encourage you to continue to have strategies around digital devices at home and encourage that face to face interaction.

Lastly, we would like to acknowledge Hunter Catonio who made permanent honour roll for the 2015.16 school year. She was inadvertently missed at last week’s award’s ceremony. Our apologies to Hunter and congratulations on a job well done!

Have a great weekend!

October 21, 2016

I hope this email finds you doing well. We’ve had a great week at school highlighted by a wonderful Academic Awards ceremony last night. It was great to celebrate the accomplishments of all our students, both currently in the school and those who have moved onto other opportunities. I was struck by how many kids made the trek back to Crossfield from other places to attend the awards. The pride they showed in their school and their accomplishments was impressive. Congratulations to all recipients.

A quick note about our attendance Synrevoice system. For gr. 7 – 12 students, attendance phone calls go out at 4:30 PM everyday. Gr. 6 students who appear absent and have not been excused by a guardian receive a phone call from Mrs. Dickie upon seeing their absence. Thank you to everyone who does call in to excuse your child – it is appreciated. You may call anytime, 24/7, to excuse your child. Of note, to be marked present, your child has to attend class for more than half the class. Showing up more than halfway through the class will result in an absent code.  If your child has an unexcused absence during the day you will be notified with an automated phone call at 4:30 PM. If you have any questions about this feel free to ask.

Have a great weekend, I hope the warmer, dryer weather keeps up for those trying to bring crops in, and we’ll talk to you next Friday.

I hope you had a good long weekend and enjoyed some Thanksgiving spirit. We are excited to be back at school.

Our School Council is up and running again with an active group of parents supporting us at the school. As well, we are looking to start our Friends of Murdoch Society. October 7, 2016

Hope you had a great week and are looking forward to the long weekend.

Thanksgiving allows us an opportunity to reflect on what we all have to be thankful for. When I look around our school I see so many things to be grateful for: wonderful facilities, terrific staff, great opportunities for students to explore areas of passion and extra curricular, and much more. We are grateful as well for the community support we receive from all of you. Have a wonderful weekend!

Have a great weekend,

September 30, 2016

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner. September has flown by here at W.G. Murdoch.

With students and staff falling into regular routines, we have made an effort to encourage students to be on time both in the morning and after lunch. When the bell rings to start class we want students in their seats ready to go. This has involved Mrs. Brown and myself being out in the entry ways, connecting with those students who are late, finding out why, and encouraging them to get to class on time. In the short time we’ve been doing this we’ve noticed a significant drop in lates and have gotten to know the students better. We would encourage you to have your student at school at 8:40 in the morning to get their day started off well.

Research has shown missing more than 10% of instructional days in a school year starts to have a negative impact on their academic performance. Lates are also included in this as students who show up late are often not ready to learn and cause disruption to the class. Thanks for your support with our encouraging students to be at school on time!

It’s hard to believe we’re heading into our last week of September. Time is definitely flying at school.

A couple highlights from the week that was. Our first School Council meeting of the year took place Tuesday, Sep 20th at 9:30 AM. School Council elections were held and we’re thrilled with the team assembled this year. If you are interested in attending our next school council meeting it is on Tuesday, October 18th at 9:30 AM.

With regards to School Council, we are looking to form a Friends of Murdoch Society Board. This group would be spearheading fundraising events for the entire school, not specific programs. We would like a member of the Society Board on the School Council and our plan is to have our first Society Meeting of the year after School Council on Tuesday, October 18th. Please let me know if you are interested on being on the Society.

Our Sr. Boys volleyball team won their first match of the year at Sundre on Wednesday, besting the Scorpions 15-13 in the decisive third set. Well done boys! A big thanks to all of our staff who are giving of their time to coach and lead our extra curricular activities. We have a generous group working with our kids.

September 16, 2016

Hello Everyone,

Our first full week of school for the year is wrapping up and staff and students are finding their rhythm. We are excited to see different clubs, athletic teams, and events up and running for kids.

With the Terry Fox Run occurring on Monday it is a great reminder to all of us of the struggles and perseverance he showed in his journey to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. To date, his initiative has led to over $700 million being raised for cancer research, a staggering amount. In Terry's own words, "Even if we don't finish, I want others to continue...it's got to keep going without me". This selfless, servant attitude has been Terry Fox's legacy and it's something we want for our students at W.G. Murdoch. Every day we see students thinking of others before themselves, hoping to start something that will spread to their fellow students. We are appreciative of our kids and our interactions with them on a daily basis and we hope they can understand the magnitude of what Terry Fox did all those years ago.

Have a great weekend!

Miss School Miss Out

For more than a decade this unique program has been operating with unqualified success.  Last year Rocky View Schools had twice as many students as the previous year that hadn’t missed a day of school all year!  This program is designed to keep kids engaged in learning and attending which gives them success with their future endeavors.

The rules for the monthly draws for perfect attendance are relatively strict.  For a student to be eligible for the monthly draw, he/she must:

1)    Be present for all scheduled classes

2)    Not be late for more than 3 classes during any month

3)    Attend all scheduled field trips as expected.

4)    Be present at school on the day the MSMO draw is made

What this means is that funerals, appointments for teeth or health, necessary surgeries if needed and like excusable reasons for missing school still mean a student is ineligible for the appropriate MSMO draw.  An absence is recorded whether it is excused or not.  Being late for classes is similarly recorded with the limit set at three in any month.

Sponsors for this program are ZyTech Building, Viterous, Century 21, Magic Mountain, co-Operators and Rotary Club of Airdrie.

Parent Council

The Parent Council AGM will be held September 20th at 9:30am at the school. All positions are available and we're looking for new people with new ideas and lots of energy. If you're looking to become more engaged in the school community, this is a great way to do so!

Student Attendance

If your child is going to miss school for any reason ie: sick, appointments, personal; please remember to call 403.946.5665 to excuse your child.  You can call this number 24/7.  Thank you.

School Forms

The first day of school your child came home with school forms that must be completed and returned to the office as soon as possible.  Please contact the office if you have not received this package.

September 9, 2016

I hope you've had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend. The past week as school brought a bit more normalcy as students settled into their classes. A couple highlights from the week included our Welcome Back BBQ which saw over 340 people served. Thanks to Gladys for her hard work putting this together and to staff, students, and parents for making the event a success. It was great to see our new Superintendent Greg Luterbach at the event as well. A big congratulations to Lisa Asselstine and Ashley Bevelander on winning our $50.00 gift card draw to Boston Pizza.

Our gr. 9 - 12 students had the opportunity to attend a guest speaker at W.H. Croxford High School on Thursday in the afternoon. Tyler Durman, a motivational speaker for youth, spoke to the students on how their choices impact their futures. Thanks to W.H. Croxford for including us in their event.

Thank you all for your continued support of our school - we appreciate it. See below for upcoming events to keep in your calendar and we look forward to seeing you around the school.

School Fees

As students are still changing courses and options, the school fees will not be available on line until closer to the end of September or the beginning of October.  A fee statement will be sent home with your child and instructions for school cash on line.  We encourage all our families to pay their school fees on line.
